Google Hangouts

Google hangouts is a really cool way to connect with people. It starts off as basically a text group chat but you can then transfer that text chat into a video conference. A really cool feature of google hangouts is the remote desktop share. A user is able to transfer their actual desktop screen onto the other user’s displays. It’s useful because everyone is actually able to see the one computer.

Another useful feature on Google hangouts is the YouTube application. A user is able to bring up YouTube on the conference screen. Then the users and are able to choose a video and as a team they can all watch it. This is useful especially in online education courses because students don’t usually meet in person. Classmates are able to watch videos and then discuss them as a team.
A really great way to kind of break down the awkwardness between users in the Google hangouts is to use the mess around with the draw tool. Users can not only customize their own faces with funny hats and images but also other users. It’s a good way to bring humor into the conversation. My classmates and I found ourselves getting comfortable with each other pretty quickly because we were messing around and putting funny stuff on each others faces.

This is an assignment from the Immersive Education course that I am taking at Boston College. The course is called Collaborative Computing. For details, visit the immersive BC portal athttp://ImmersiveEducation.org/@/bc
