Class 9: Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)

HTML (hypertext markup language) was developed from an older from SGML (standard generalized markup language) HTML is the language that makes it possible to communicate with each other. It is used on multiple media devices.HTML allows us to have the possibility of creating hyperlinks. There are several versions of HTML that are used. Fortunately for us all modern web browsers are able to read them.

Quirks Mode, HTML 2.0, HTML 3.0, HTML 4.01, HTML 5 are all version of HTML formatting. Quirks Mode will support pretty much any HTML although there are a few bugs attached to it. HTML 2.0 came out in 1995 and it was the first standardized HTML. HTML 3.0 was the first HTML to be ratified by the W3C. HTML 4.01 is the most modern version of HTML in use. HTML 5 is still in the works.

Creating a HTML webpage is fairly simple. There is quite a few different functions or keywords that need to be learned but basically once you get the hang of it it’s kind of like riding a bike. The second video actually states that a person can learn the basics of HTML in about 5 minutes. HTML essentially uses tags to identify page content. For example to identify a paragraph when writing HTML the tag used would be <p>.
