Class 8, Botnets & zombie networks

A botnet or also commonly known as a zombie army is a series of connected computers that forward transmission. These transmissions can be spam or even viruses. It is referred as a zombie army because the computer sends these transmissions unknowingly to the computer’s owner. Most computers that are affected with botnets are home based computers. They currently pose a bigger threat to the internet that any other type of virus or worm.
Botnets are a growing threat to the technological world. Botnets are one of the most sophisticated and popular types of cybercrime today. They are popular because they are a hacker to take control of multiple computers at a time. It kind of has a snowball effect. The more computers infected the strong the zombie army becomes. Some botnets even have hundreds or thousands of computers at their disposal.
Botnets sneak onto a person’s computer in many different ways. Botnets often spread themselves across the internet to garner a wider range of victims. When a botnet finds a vulnerable computer they quickly infect it and stay hidden until the handler decides what to do with the computer. Once a computer is infected it can carry out a number of tasks from sending spam and viruses, stealing personal information, DoS (denial of service), and click fraud.
